Also Known As
Wilfrido Maria Guerrero; the father of the UP playwriting tradition; author of “Wanted: A Chaperon”.
Examples and Analogies
If Severino Montano built the national theater’s foundations, Guerrero ran its repertory engine: his one-acts worked on Philippine stages the way Chekhov’s short plays worked in Russian towns – small casts, everyday families, durable truths.
Usage Scenarios
His one-acts are staging staples of school and university theater; “Wanted: A Chaperon” remains a classroom favorite for its comedy of manners; theater historians study the UP Mobile Theater as an early model of cultural outreach.
Strategies
Directors cast his domestic comedies tightly, keeping the swift tempo his scripts demand; scholars read his plays against 1930s-1950s middle-class Manila manners; workshops use his drafts to teach economical one-act construction.
Security and Safety Measures
Performance rights flow through his estate and the UP theater he led, so groups secure permissions; archivists preserve his typescripts and production photographs under controlled library conditions.
Historical Context
Guerrero began writing for the stage as a teenager in prewar Manila, led the UP Dramatic Club from 1946 onward, and in the 1970s took his Mobile Theater on national and international tours. His playwriting course at UP trained generations of Filipino theater artists, and his collected plays appeared in multiple volumes.
Challenges and Controversies
His comedies of chaperons and propriety are sometimes read today as period pieces; critics debate their class blind spots while affirming their craft, and the Mobile Theater’s touring model is measured against community-theater practice of later decades.
