Undercoating

Definition

Undercoating is the application of a protective coating to the underside of a vehicle — the chassis rails, floor pan, seams, and wheel arches — to block water, salt, and road debris from reaching bare metal. The coating is typically brushed or sprayed after the underbody is washed and any surface rust treated, and is formulated to remain slightly flexible so it absorbs stone chips instead of letting them through. Undercoating is standard practice for vehicles operated in flood-prone, coastal, or gravel-road environments, where underbody corrosion is a leading cause of chassis deterioration.
