BYD’s presence in the Philippines has seen significant growth and strategic realignment, particularly with the entry of a new official distributor, ACMobility, a subsidiary of Ayala Corporation.
History and Distributorship
BYD initially entered the Philippine automotive market through Solar Transport and Automotive Resources Corp. (STAR Corp.), which began distributing BYD vehicles, including both internal combustion engine (ICE) models and early electric vehicles like the e6, starting in 2012. While STAR Corp. made efforts to introduce BYD’s new energy vehicle technology, the market for EVs in the Philippines was still in its nascent stages.
A pivotal shift occurred in August 2023 when ACMobility, the automotive arm of Ayala Corporation, officially took over the exclusive distributorship of BYD passenger vehicles in the Philippines. This strategic move aimed to leverage Ayala’s extensive business ecosystem, including its renewable energy, property development, and financing sectors, to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles nationwide. ACMobility’s vision includes building a comprehensive EV ecosystem, encompassing not just vehicle sales but also charging infrastructure and after-sales support.
Under ACMobility, BYD is expanding its dealership network rapidly across the archipelago, with plans to establish numerous showrooms and service centers in key cities and provinces.
